Getting Started with PLSclear

Does PLSclear or PLS grant permissions on behalf of publishers?

Permissions granted through PLSclear are granted by the publisher or rights holder of the work.

Some publishers have their permissions managed by PLS on their behalf under the PLS PermissionsAssist service. If this is the case, the permissions policies and prices for requests are still set by the publisher.

Does the PLSclear database include titles published outside of the UK?

Yes, our database has over 50 million records of English-language titles published around the world. Please note, however, that not all requests for titles published overseas can be facilitated via PLSclear.

Permissions for website content

Search for the top level URL of the publication rather than the page the article is located on. For example, search for PLSclear.com rather than PLSclear.com/publishers.

Permissions for music

For requests to reuse music, you should contact the Music Publisher’s Association (MPA).

Permissions for pictures, photographs, or images

To make a request for a book cover or book jacket, search for the correct edition of the title, choose ‘Illustration’ on the first page of the Request Wizard form and fill in the relevant details on the next page.

If you want to reuse an image found online, you will need to contact the owner of the website.

Requests to reuse a book cover or book jacket

To make a request for a book cover or book jacket, search for the correct edition of the title, choose ‘Illustration’ on the first page of the Request Wizard form and fill in the relevant details on the next page.

Translation rights

PLSclear can be used for requests to translate individual chapters or short extracts of text but to acquire full book translation rights, please contact the publisher’s rights team directly.

Television or Film Rights

If you are requesting incidental use of a book as a prop, you can use PLSclear to make your request. However, to option a title for film or television, please contact the publisher’s rights team directly.

Can PLSclear help secure permission when rights have reverted to the author?

We have a partnership with ALCS (the Authors Licensing and Collecting Agency), who will search their author databases on your behalf. We also recommend you search the Watch File, which is a database of copyright contacts for writers and artists.
